TheRainforest Alliance, a non-profit organisation based in New York, awards its certificates to coffee farmers and growers whose growing methods meet environmental and social criteria. These criteria are set to protect the environment, biodiversity and workers' rights.
Environment: farmers must restore or maintain the original forest cover of their land so that at least 40% of the area is covered by shade. Farmers must maintain natural watercourses. Any trade in wild animals, destruction of their natural habitat, destruction of ecosystems or pollution of nature is prohibited. It seeks the continued natural coexistence of wild animals, plants and people.
Social aspect: the organization aims to eliminate child labour. Thus, children under the age of 15 may not be employed at all. Minors may be employed but must not handle weights greater than 20% of their own weight, work in hazardous environments, and must always be accompanied by a parent or guardian. The aim is also to avoid discrimination against employees.
Flavour: Brazil Fazenda Rainforest is characterised by a very low acidity, a slightly nutty flavour and, above all, a full-bodied taste of dense chocolate. The coffee is slightly sweet.
