What is Chemex?

Chemex is a special kind of dripper for making filter coffee. It was first produced in the 1940s in the USA by chemist Peter Schlumbohm. Judging by the name and the author's profession, one might expect a complicated device, but the opposite is true. Anyone can make coffee in a chemex with a little practice.

The main reason why chemex coffee is so delicious is undoubtedly the special filters. These are made from pulp and are up to a third stronger than conventional paper filters.

What to look out for when choosing a Chemex

The most important thing is to choose the right volume. In the case of a Chemex, there are usually three basic sizes to choose from.

Chemex up to 500 ml - a volume suitable for about 3 cups
Chemex up to 1 litre - you can prepare around 6 cups in this chemex
Chemex over 1 l - this volume will guarantee around 9-10 cups of coffee at a time

When buying a chemex, it is important not to forget about quality filters. Purchase filters designed specifically for Chemex, unfortunately others won't fit.

Design matter

Chemex became popular very soon after its creation. Within four years of its inception, it was part of the MOMA design collection, and has also appeared in many films. Ian Fleming inserted it into one of the James Bond stories. Even today it is extremely popular, especially abroad. You don't often see chemex in our cafes.
