What is GourmetKáva Specialty?
It is a specialty coffee that we have carefully selected for you, and Beansmith roasted it for us. There are many definitions, but the SCA (Specialty Coffee Association) specifically states that these are coffees that score at least 80 out of 100 in aprofessional evaluationand do not contain any significant flavor defects. With our specialty coffees, you’ll also always find 100% transparency (farms, importer, roaster, and retailer).
What makes specialty coffees different from others?
Don’t expect pronounced bitterness in these coffees, as they’re roasted lighter than regular coffees. As a rule, you’ll tend to find fruitier flavors in them. All of our coffees are primarily intended for home brewing methods such as drip coffee, but that doesn’t mean they can’t be enjoyable in a moka pot as well.
Brewing Tip
We don’t specify exact grind sizes because every grinder is different, but you can try grinding to roughly match the measurements below. However, this is just one of many possible scenarios—it’s simply a starting point.

Information from the farmer
The coffee comes from the Kiri Factory processing station, operated by the Ngiriambu Farmers Cooperative Society. More than 3,500 small-scale growers from the surrounding area supply coffee cherries to the station; they primarily farm on small plots of land measuring up to one hectare.
They primarily grow the traditional Kenyan varieties SL28 and SL34, known for their high quality and distinctive flavor profile. Thanks to their deep root systems, these varieties adapt well to local conditions and limited water availability.
Processing
Ripe coffee cherries are hand-picked and carefully sorted upon arrival at the Kiri Factory. The pulp is then removed, and the coffee is fermented for approximately 24–36 hours. It is then washed with clean water and soaked for another 24 hours.
Finally, the coffee is dried on raised African drying beds for about 20 days. During drying, the beans are turned regularly and protected from excessive sunlight and nighttime humidity to ensure the process proceeds slowly and evenly.
AB Grade
Kenya is one of the most renowned producers of specialty coffee and is known for its emphasis on careful sorting and processing. The AB grade refers to the size of the beans—in this case, they measure approximately 6–7 mm.
