Venuste, a former teacher, founded the Tumba station where he devotes himself to coffee. Today, the station employs 12 permanent and up to 95 seasonal workers and supplies coffee to over 1650 smallholders. In 2022, they processed 290,000 kg of cherries with an emphasis on quality, which Venuste sees as a service to the community.
Tumba coffee processing involves hand sorting and flotation of ripe cherries, followed by pre-drying on tables and then long drying (25-30 days) on traditional African beds for optimal circulation. After drying, the skin is mechanically removed and the green coffee is stored in ideal conditions. The station is open all year round due to the favourable climate.
Tumba grows the traditional Rwandan variety of Red Bourbon. Combined with the natural processing, the coffee yields a cup with the subtle sweetness, floral notes and citrus freshness typical of quality Rwandan coffees.
