The coffee is ground.

The Kieni processing station is located in Kenya’s Nyeri County, approximately 1,700 meters above sea level. It is part of the Mugaga Farmers’ Cooperative Society, which brings together roughly 1,000 smallholder farmers. They grow coffee on small family plots scattered across the local slopes and plateaus.

Nyeri lies between the Aberdare Mountains and the western slopes of Mount Kenya. The cooler climate, high elevation, and fertile red volcanic soil here create ideal conditions for the slow ripening of coffee cherries. As a result, the beans develop greater density, and the coffee acquires the region’s distinctive character—lively acidity and a fuller, syrupy body.

The Kieni station also emphasizes transparent collaboration with farmers. During the purchase process, it uses an electronic weighing system, and each farmer receives a printed receipt detailing the exact quantity of cherries delivered both for that specific transaction and in total. Even this seemingly small step helps build fairer and more trustworthy relationships between the cooperative and its members.
