If you have a manual coffee grinder, the correct grind size setting is absolutely crucial for the result in the cup. Before you start, it’s always a good idea to read the manual for your specific grinder, as each type may have a slightly different design and setting mechanism.
Setting the grind size
-
Unscrew the container for the ground coffee (bottom part of the grinder).
-
Attach the handle (manual crank) to the top of the grinder.
-
At the bottom of the grinder, you’ll find the adjustment nut (or wheel) used to control the grind size.
Most quality manual grinders use so-called “clicks” – small fixed steps that you can both hear and feel when turning the adjustment nut. One click = one defined adjustment.
How to find the first click
-
Tighten the grind adjustment nut as much as possible until the burrs no longer spin freely (hold the crank so it doesn’t turn).
-
Then begin to loosen the nut toward coarser grinding until you hear the first click.
-
Make 2–3 clicks and try turning the crank as if grinding. If you hear the burrs scraping, add one more click.
-
Repeat until the burrs no longer touch – that’s your first click (your starting point for setting).
Now check your grinder’s manual – most manufacturers list recommended settings for different brewing methods (espresso, moka pot, V60, French press, etc.) by number of clicks from the first.
For example:
-
V60: 18–24 clicks
-
Espresso: 5–8 clicks
-
French press: 28+ clicks
Cleaning and maintenance
To preserve both coffee flavor and grinder longevity, it’s important to clean it regularly.
-
Never rinse the burr assembly with water! Water can damage metal parts or bearings.
-
Carefully disassemble the grinder and empty out leftover coffee.
-
Use the included brush or a soft brush to clean between the burrs and the hopper of any coffee residue.
-
You can usually rinse the bottom container (for ground coffee) with water, but always dry it thoroughly.
A well-maintained grinder will serve you for years – and the coffee will taste better than ever.
