The Rainforest Alliance, a non-profit organization based in New York, awards its certificates to coffee farmers and growers whose cultivation methods meet ecological and social criteria . These criteria are set to protect the environment, biodiversity and workers' rights .

Environment: farmers must restore or maintain the original forest cover of their territory so that at least 40% of the area is covered by shade. Growers must preserve natural watercourses . Any trade in wild animals, destruction of their natural environment, destruction of ecosystems or pollution of nature is prohibited. They strive for a permanent natural coexistence of wild animals, plants and people.

Social aspect: The goal of the organization is to eliminate child labor . Thus, children under the age of 15 may not be employed at all. Minors may be employed, but may not handle weights greater than 20% of their own weight, work in hazardous environments, and must always be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
