Banko Chelbesa is located in the Gedeb region. Yirgacheffe is considered the largest coffee-producing area in Gedeb. Coffee here is grown primarily by small family farms that have passed down their craft from generation to generation. Growing conditions in this region (Yirgacheffe) are characterized by very high elevation and acidic soils rich in iron, which contribute to the coffee’s floral flavor profile.
The coffee is often named after the village where it is grown. The Banko Chelbesa processing stations are organized to produce consistent, high-quality coffee every year. They are generally equipped to process both natural and washed coffees. This system uses elevated drying racks and washing channels to ensure careful monitoring during the drying and washing phases.
Processing: For this washed coffee, the pulp is removed during harvesting to preserve freshness. The cherries are then fermented in tanks, thoroughly washed, and sun-dried. The goal is to achieve a clean and bright flavor accompanied by the floral and citrus notes typical of this region.
