Producer and Processing Station
Mubuku coffee comes from the processing station of the same name in western Uganda, where it is produced in collaboration with Ugacof and Sucafina. Their shared goal is to improve the quality of local coffee production, refine fermentation processes, and support smallholder farmers. The station focuses on meticulous sorting of coffee cherries and experimental processing methods that help develop the natural flavor potential of individual varieties.
Farm and Location
Mubuku is located in the Kasese region of western Uganda, near the Rwenzori Mountains. The processing station is situated along the Mubuku River, which originates in mountain glaciers and flows through fertile countryside. Coffee trees in this region are grown at elevations of 1,300–2,000 meters above sea level. Local conditions, combined with careful processing, contribute to the coffee’s complex flavor profile.
SL14 Variety
The SL14 variety was bred through selection in Kenya in the 1930s. It is known primarily for its drought resistance and ability to adapt to more challenging growing conditions. Today, it is one of the major varieties grown in both Uganda and Kenya. The coffee is processed using the Anaerobic Natural method, in which whole coffee cherries ferment in an environment with limited oxygen access. After harvest, the cherries are carefully sorted and placed in sealed plastic barrels, where fermentation takes place for 40 hours. They are then spread out on raised drying beds, where they are regularly turned and monitored. Drying takes approximately 18–24 days. This process enhances the development of the fruity notes, sweetness, and full body that are characteristic of Mubuku coffee.
