What is Gourmet Coffee Specialty?
It is a selection of coffee that we have carefully selected and roasted for you by Beansmith Roastery. There are many definitions, the SCA (Select Coffee Association) specifically states that it is coffee that scores at least 80 out of 100 in a professional evaluation, and contains no significant defects in taste. You will also always find 100% transparency (farms, importer, roaster and retailer) with our select coffees.
What's different about our selection coffees?
Don't expect a distinct bitterness in the coffee, as they are roasted lighter than regular coffees. As a rule, you will find more fruity flavours in them. All of our coffees are primarily intended for home brewing like filter coffee, but that doesn't mean they can't be interesting in a mocha pot.
Preparation tip
We don't write down the exact coarseness of the grind because every grinder has it differently, but you can try grinding to get about what we get below. But it's really one of many different cases. It's just kind of a jumping off point.

Information from the farmer
Gatina station is located near the town of Karatina in the Nyeri region. It was built in 1968 and is located between the western slopes of Mt. Kenya and the eastern slopes of the Aberdare Mountains. The station is managed by the Mugaga Farmers' Cooperative Society. Today, 790 members, over 30% of whom are women, deliver coffee cherries here. The farmers collectively cultivate approximately 142 hectares of land. This translates to about a tenth of a hectare per grower - several hundred coffee trees.
The cherries are picked by hand, only the perfectly ripe ones, and delivered directly to the Gatina station or to one of the collection points. This is followed by careful hand sorting, during which unripe or damaged fruit is removed. Strict quality control encourages farmers to select only the best harvest. The cherries are further processed in a three-disc pulper and fermented overnight.
The Mugaga cooperative operates five washing stations and has over 4 800 growers. As well as ensuring quality produce, it helps farmers increase yields and actively promotes the involvement of women and young people in coffee farming - women now make up a full third of its members.
Kenyan coffee is graded according to bean size. The largest beans, designated AA, are larger than 7.2 mm in diameter.
