What is Gourmet Coffee Specialty?

It's a true specialty coffee that has been carefully selected and roasted for us by Beansmith, the roaster of choice. There are many definitions, one of the more specific ones from the SCA (Select Coffee Association) states that they are coffees that score at least 80 out of 100 in a professional evaluation and have no accurately mentioned defects in taste. You'll also find 100% transparency (farms, importer, roaster and retailer) with our select coffees.

What's different about our selection coffees?

Don't expect a distinct bitterness in the coffee, as they are roasted lighter than regular coffees. As a rule, you will find more fruity flavours in them. All of our coffees are primarily intended for home brewing like filter coffee, but that doesn't mean they can't be interesting in a mocha pot.

Preparation tip

We don't write down the exact coarseness of the grind, as every grinder has it differently, but you can try grinding to get about what we get below. But it's really one of many different cases. It's just kind of a jumping off point.

Information from the importer

FECCEG (La Federación Comercializadora de Café Especial de Guatemala) was founded in 2006 because of the coffee crisis. The aim is to support coffee producing communities, improve market access and improve export logistics. It provides technical support, crop diversification programmes, education on agriculture and assistance with Bio and Fairtrade certification.

While coffee is the main crop for these producers, they also grow honey, fruit trees and subsistence crops such as maize and beans. They also plant trees to preserve biodiversity and protect groundwater supplies, as well as various flowers and plants that attract bees and increase their honey production.

Each producer processes and dries their own coffee on small terraces. They all have their own small peelers, fermentation tanks and washing systems. COMAL organises the collection of dried parchment from members and delivers it to the FECCEG drying plant in Quetzaltenango. Here a quality control team analyses each batch. Depending on the quality, it will either be kept separately and sold as a micro-lot or mixed with other coffees from the same producing organisation and quality group.
