About this coffee:

Rwanda offers ideal conditions for growing coffee , such as high altitude, regular rainfall, volcanic soil with a quality organic structure and the abundance of the Bourbon cultivar. The vast majority of coffee here is produced by small-scale growers, who, according to some estimates, are up to around half a million with land that often does not exceed one hectare per family. Coffee is grown in most parts of the country, with particularly large concentrations along Lake Kivu and in the southern province. Farmers usually gather in so-called cooperatives and share the services of centralized washing stations. Flowering takes place between September and October and the harvest continues from March to July, while they begin to arrive in Europe from August to December.

Mwito Station was built in 2008 on a large plot of land on the shores of Lake Kivu, but for many years it did not work steadily due to the fact that the former owner did not have enough funds to cover the working capital. Over the years, farmers have lacked a consistent partner to support them beyond the purchase of coffee cherries. The RTC bought Mwito in 2017 together with the Kirambo station from the same owner and started operating these stations for the first time during the 2018 season. certification. Starting in 2021, thanks to the stability and training provided by the RTC, the productivity and quality of the cherries delivered has improved significantly, leading to higher yields per kilogram of cherries delivered. In 2019, the RTC also built a kindergarten for children of coffee growers. RTC at Mwito Station has also made significant investments in drying African beds, renovating washbasins and brand new motorized peelers, and has the potential to produce some of the best coffees in Rwanda. The station currently produces both natural and washed coffees. All delivered cherries delivered to farmers during the day are first washed and inspected to remove and separate any potential defects, such as immature floats or any foreign matter, before further processing.
