About this coffee:

Rwanda offers ideal conditions for growing coffee, such as high altitude, regular rainfall, volcanic soil with a good organic structure and an abundance of Bourbon cultivars. The vast majority of coffees here are produced by small-scale smallholders, estimated by some to number up to half a million, with landholdings often not exceeding one hectare per family. Coffee is grown in most parts of the country, with particularly large concentrations along Lake Kivu and in the southern province. Farmers usually gather in so-called cooperatives and share the services of centralised washing stations. Flowering takes place between September and October and harvesting continues from March to July, with arrivals in Europe beginning in August to December.

The Mwito station was built back in 2008 on a large plot of land on the shores of Lake Kivu, but did not operate steadily for many years due to the former owner not having sufficient funds to cover the working capital. Over the years, the farmers lacked a consistent partner to support them beyond the purchase of coffee cherries. RTC purchased Mwito in 2017 along with Kirambo Station from the same owner and began operating these stations for the first time during the 2018 season. A year later, all farmers were registered and offered enrollment in RTC's farmer impact and extension programs and preparation for certification. Beginning in 2021, due to the stability and training provided by RTC, the productivity and quality of cherries delivered improved significantly, resulting in higher yields per kilogram of cherries delivered. RTC also built a kindergarten for the children of coffee farmers in 2019. RTC at Mwito station has also invested significantly in African drying beds, refurbishment of washing channels and a brand new motorised peeler, and has the potential to produce some of the best coffee available in Rwanda. The station currently produces both natural and washed coffees. All cherries delivered by the farmers during the day are first washed and inspected to remove and separate any potential defects such as immature so-called floaters or any foreign matter before being processed further.
