Kirura Farm is part of the larger Komothai Group, which brings together several coffee processors in the Kiambu region. Kirura Farm itself processes beans from 1047 members and farmers and Samuel Murigu is responsible for the proper running of the processing plant.
The Kiambu area is located on the outskirts of the capital city of Nairobi. It lies on volcanic bedrock and its high altitude, abundant rainfall and warm climate make it ideal for growing quality coffee trees. Tea and dairy production is also significant in the area. Farmers use cattle rearing and obtain natural fertiliser - cow dung.
The coffee cherries on the Kirura farm are hand-picked and then processed in a processing plant. Here, only the ripe fruit is re-picked. The skins are then removed and fermented without water for 16-24 hours. The coffee beans are then washed in water, stripped of their pulp and spread in parchment on African beds. In order to achieve even drying, the beans are covered with a tarpaulin and turned regularly on hot days. The whole drying process takes 14-20 days.
