Costa Rica is one of the countries we managed to travel through and visit the farms there. Among them, La Candelilla, which is more the name of a family processing station to be precise. All in all, the Sanchez family farms 70 hectares of land and processes around 100 tonnes of green grains a year, which is about 500 tonnes of cherries to give you an idea. In total, 7 siblings take care of the farm and the mill.

In general, Costa Rica is a fairly developed, affluent country with good infrastructure. Also for this reason, the scale of the family farm here is somewhat different than in, for example, Guatemala or Peru. The coffee growing areas around the capital San José are very diverse and the microclimates vary quite a lot between them. Tarrazú is an area with high alt itudes and very steep green hillsides. In fact, we probably liked it the best and we got a great surprise there. The station ran like a perfectly lubricated machine, running 22 hours a day during the harvest. The other two hours were spent cleaning the machines, so basically non-stop operation. I guess that's why they have a 3L batch brew Bunn in the office, no wonder.
